BIPOC organization secures funding support to facilitate the largest national survey of Black communities across Kentucky.

Historia Group is excited to announce that Play Cousins Collective has been awarded $25,000 from Black Futures Lab as a Partner Organization to The Black Census Project.

The Black Census Project is an initiative of the Black Futures Lab and will facilitate the largest national survey of Black people across class, disability, gender, geography, immigration status, and sexuality. The collected information will clarify the diversity of wants and needs that Black people imagine for our communities.

“We are so grateful to Black Futures Lab for their support and partnership in this initiative and look forward to an amazing summer amplifying the voices of our people!” said Kristen Williams, Executive Director of Play Cousins Collective. “We support the Black family in active citizenship as a way to advocate for ourselves and our children. In creating a community where we can thrive, we see the census and voter registration as a useful tool in liberation work.”

Kristen Williams, Executive Director of Play Cousins Collective

Play Cousins Collective is one of the leading, Black-led community-based organizations in Louisville modeling civic engagement by working with elected officials, legislators, and university institutions to ensure representation of Black community voice. Play Cousin Collective will serve as a Partner Organization of The Black Census to ask Black communities in Louisville, what they see as the key issues in the community and how they want to address those issues.

This funding will be used to collect survey information for Louisville residents to ask questions about key issues impacting Black communities including generational oppression, mass incarceration, police violence, and inequities in healthcare and economic access. The information gathered will guide the priorities and positions of the Black Futures Lab.

This is a historic project that requires commitment from partner organizations, like Play Cousins Collective, to support solutions derived from imagination and innovation as they implement community advocacy as a resource for improving the ways we serve our Black communities.
